Get Your Motor Runnin’

We took the Metro back to the airport this morning to pick up the car. We had booked a convertable with the website suggesting a Mustang (or similar). When we finally reached the car lot to pick up our car, we found ourselves with the keys to a convertible with leather seats and cruise control…

Ok, so maybe not quite a Mustang but it’s still a convertable and a something we’re a little more used to from being at home. Fortunately both our suitcases fit snugly in the boot and we still have plenty of room to spare for our legs. Tom did the first driving stint, from the airport to Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home about half an hour away.

Here, You can walk around the grounds and the mansion, and around some of the land that was used for farming in the 1700s. The views across the Potomac river were impressive. There was also a good museum about slavery at Mount Vernon – there were over 300 enslaved people working on the estate when Washington died. He never spoke publicly in support of abolishing slavery, but freed over 100 slaves in his will.

By the time we left at 3.30, we still had 3 and a half hours of driving to get to our hotel. I did the first section to a McDonald’s for tea (no McFlurry today) then Tom drove the long stretch to Chesapeake, Virginia.

  1. Just put the top down, your shades on, the radio up loud and Tom to do some brumming noises and a mini can become a mustang!!!
