After spending the night in our dodgy motel, we were keen to get going this morning. We stopped first to fill up with gas for our 300+ mile drive – about half the price as in the UK. We tried The Egg Bistro for breakfast but there was a big Sunday morning crowd in, so we got on the road instead, and stopped for pancakes just before we left Virginia.

We crossed the state border into North Carolina and followed the interstates to Wilmington. Much less dodgy looking hotel tonight. Tom popped to the ‘gym’ quickly – no air conditioning meant he had a very sweaty run on a treadmill that had seen better days!
We drove through downtown Wilmington just before 5 to visit the USS North Carolina, a huge battleship docked in the river. The ship fought in most of the major battles in the Pacific during a World War II, and we walked around lots of the upper and (very warm) lower decks. This was really interesting and made for some spectacular views when the sun went down with a thunderstorm behind it.
For dinner, we drove back into Wilmington and found a little bar/restaurant for tea and both had excellent burgers, with a side of crispy Brussels sprouts. To work off some of this dinner we had a quick stroll along the river boardwalk before heading back to our hotel.
