This morning we caught a flight to our second stop on the tour, Washington DC. After the short flight and Metro ride into the city, we found our hotel and dropped off our bags. We are staying in the Morrison Clark Inn, a very nice historic inn a short walk from the White House.
This was our first stop on Wednesday afternoon. We walked to Pennsylvania Ave, and saw the front and back doors of the White House (obviously from quite a large distance!). Then we walked to the National Mall.
First we saw the Washington Monument, which towers over everything surrounding it. Unfortunately it is closed for repairs so we couldn’t go up to the top. We then walked to the World War II memorial, which remembers all the American soldiers who died in Europe and the Pacific. We walked along the reflecting pool to the imposing Lincoln Monument, which is extremely impressive and very popular.
Next we followed the path around the tidal basin towards the Jefferson Monument. On the way we saw the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial (my favourite – it felt peaceful and lots of the quotes engraved on the monument seem very relevant today). I was surprised by the scale of all the memorials on the National Mall, so it was good to see and appreciate them up close.
After a snack and a shower at the hotel, we went for dinner at The Dabney, our first ever Michelin star restaurant! The menu is made using local ingredients and changes daily. We particularly enjoyed the catfish sliders and sugartoads (small battered fish, not actual toads).
Brilliant to see all your photos. Where are the catfish sliders and sugertoads? X
In our tummies!
